The effects of COVID-19 have been most visible in the travel sector. As a result of border closures and tightened visa regulations, passport power has changed significantly. Around 91 countries are still on complete lockdown where no one can come in or leave.

 In light of this, the World Openness Score has fallen by more than 17% from 21,360 in December 2019 to the current score of 18,137.

In 2019, the Passport Index ranked India 67th  amongst 199 countries. At the time, Indian passport holders could get visa-free access to 25 countries and a visa on arrival to 39 countries.

Currently, individuals with an Indian passport can visit only 16 countries without a prior visa and can get a visa on arrival for 33 countries. However, as per the ranking system, India is currently ranked at the 53rd position.

As per the Passport Index listing, there are 16 countries that offer visa-free access to Indians. This includes:

The Current State of International Travel from India

India currently has an embargo on international flights. This holds valid till September 30th. However, India has entered into agreements with 16 countries to create air bubbles or air bridges. This list includes:

  3. Germany
  4. The UK
  5. Canada
  6. The Maldives
  7. UAE
  8. Qatar
  9. Bahrain
  10. Nigeria
  11. Afghanistan
  12. Iraq
  13. Japan
  14. Oman
  15. Kenya
  16. Bhutan

International air bubbles allow Indians and citizens of these countries to travel between the two countries.

To be eligible, they must hold a visa (other than a tourist visa) that is valid for at least one more month. International travel from India for tourism purposes is still not permitted.
