For a traveler, an embassy and a consulate may seem like interchangeable names but, there is a subtle difference between these two offices. Officials in both these offices represent their government in a foreign country but they play different roles. Let us find out the difference between consulate and embassy
An embassy is a permanent diplomatic office that is usually located in the country’s capital. It is important to know that a country will establish its embassy in another country only if it recognizes the sovereignty of that country.
A country will be represented by only one embassy in another country. On the other hand, a country may be represented by several consulates in another country. These may be located in one or more major cities. In some places, consulates may be referred to as junior embassies.
An embassy is headed by an Ambassador while a consulate is headed by Consuls. The Ambassador is considered a spokesperson for his/ her government.
Their role deals with diplomatic and political relationships between the two countries. Embassies also look after the welfare of citizens from their home country who are currently, studying, working or staying in the country where they are located.
Embassies have the responsibility of informing their governments about any important political, social, economic, military or other events occurring in the host country. They are responsible for arranging official visits and preparing treaties between the two countries.
Some embassies may have a consular section that deals with visas and residency certificates.
Consulates look into minor diplomatic relations and may be considered representatives for public administration. Their focus is more on maintaining trade and commerce links between the two countries.
The consulates facilitate imports and exports and help both countries invest in each other’s economy. They also deal with issues related to passports and visas.
In terms of reports, consulates tell their home country about the important births, deaths, marriages and other social events occurring in the host country. Consulates are also responsible for the care of citizens from their home country that may be arrested or legally detained by the host country.
