23 Best Indian Universities According To The QS World University Rankings

  • MIT retains the top spot for the 8th year
  • IIT, Mumbai improves ranking by 27 spots and retains spot as India’s top university
  • 5 out of 23 Indian universities included in the list are privately funded

Not all educational institutions are equal. According to the QS World University Rankings for 2020, 23 Indian institutions are ranked amongst the top 1000 in the world.

Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has again been named the number 1 university. This is the 8th consecutive year that the MIT has claimed this spot.

The QS World University Rankings

The QS World University Rankings is an annual list of the top universities around the world. It is the only international ranking system that has received approval from the International Ranking Expert Group (IREG).

In order to create this list, universities are ranked according to six metrics. This includes:

  • Academic Reputation
  • Employer Reputation
  • Faculty/Student Ratio
  • Citations per faculty
  • International Faculty Ratio
  • International Student Ratio

5 out of the top 10 spots on the list were taken by higher educational institutions in the USA. 4 universities from the UK also made the list along with one university from Switzerland. 

It is interesting to note that all 5 educational institutions from the USA on this list are privately funded while those from the UK and Switzerland are publically funded.

IIT Mumbai raked the best university in India. This is the second consecutive year that the university has claimed this rank. The university was ranked 162nd worldwide in 2018, 179th in 2019 and this year was ranked at the 152nd spot.

Two other Indian institutes also came into the top 200 universities worldwide. IIT Delhi stood at the 182nd spot while the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru was ranked 184th.

Most of the Indian institutes that came into the top 1000 universities are government-funded institutions. However, 5 are privately funded.
