Asian Immigrants in Canada

Canada welcomes immigrants from all over the world. In 2011, a report about immigration trends in Canada showed that Asians accounted for 45% of the country’s total immigrant population.

According to the 2019 National Opinion Poll, 54% of Canadians agreed that the country should look towards Asia to meet their talent deficit. However, immigrants from all Asian countries are not considered equal.

Amidst the rising tensions between Canada and China, 6 out of 10 Canadians believe that they are less receptive to Chinese talent.

In comparison, Canadians are more in favor of STEM qualified immigrants from South Korea (76%), India (73%) and the Philippines (69%).

Asian Immigrant Ratings For Science-Tech Jobs

When asked to rate immigrants according to the suitability for various job profiles, China was ranked lowest for all profiles. Indians were ranked most appropriate for most positions.

More Indians Getting Permanent Residency In Canada

Canadian permanent residency is much easier to get as compared to the American Green Card. This is one of the reasons why many immigrants are moving to Canada.

According to the Canadian immigration report from 2018, almost 2.25 lakh Indians will be Canadian permanent residents in the three years to follow.

From January to October 2018, almost 25% of the Canadian permanent resident permits issued were given to Indian immigrants.

The number of PR visas issued to Indian immigrants has almost doubled from 2015 to 2018. These numbers are estimated to rise further with each coming year.

The number of PR visas issued to Indian immigrants is expected to reach 72,776 in 2019, 75,020 in 2020 and 77,000 in 2021.
