Grenada Citizenship By Investment – The New Route To USA

Grenada’s investment visa treaty with the USA has made it a popular route for immigrants to the USA. According to the Grenada Citizenship By Investment (CBI) Program, applicants must make an investment of $220,000 in a real estate project that has been approved by the government.

Once the applicant attains citizenship of Grenada, he/she can apply for US citizenship through the country’s E2 visa treaty with the USA

The USA EB-5 Immigrant Investor Visa Program

The minimum amount immigrants needed to invest in targeted employment areas was increased from $500,000 to $900,000. Similarly, the minimum amount immigrants needed to invest in non-targeted employment areas was increased from $1 million to $1.8 million.

As of November 2019, the minimum investment in targeted and non-targeted employment area required for US citizenship through the EB-5 Immigrant Investor Visa program was increased. The result, a growing number of wealthy Indian immigrants to the USA have turned to Grenada as their route to US citizenship.

Grenada is a small island country in the Caribbean Sea near Trinidad and Tobago. Also known as the Spice Island of the Caribbean, Grenada has a number of spice plantations.

It consists of the main Grenada island and 6 other small islands. It has a largely African population. Grenada allows individuals to hold dual citizenship.

  • Be healthy and free from infections

An individual may apply for citizenship along with his/ her spouse, dependent children under the age of 18 years and dependent elderly parents and grandparents.

Grenada Citizenship By Investment – How To Apply

Citizenship through investment can be acquired through two routes-

  • Contribution to the National Transformation Fund (NTF)

This is a government fund that finances economic projects for Grenada’s future. This is a one-time investment and must be made through a licensed Local Agent.

The individual may either apply directly for citizenship after making this contribution or apply for permanent residency first and later for citizenship.

  • Investment in Real Estate

Applying for citizenship through this route begins with a review of potential properties by the Citizenship by Investment Committee. Viable projects are shortlisted and recommended to the Minister for approval.

Shortlisted projects could include villas, resorts and luxury hotels. The investment may be made through a licensed Local Agent. These investments must be maintained for at least 3 years from the date of getting citizenship.

The E2 Visa

The E2 visa is also a type of investment visa. With this visa, the applicant can get US citizenship within 3 months. To be eligible, the applicant must invest a minimum of $150,000 in an enterprise that he/ she will develop and direct.

The investor must own at least 50% of the enterprise. This visa is initially issued for 5 years and can later be extended for successive 2 years periods. It can be extended to their spouses and dependent children under the age of 21 years as well.

The investment required for the Grenada CBI program and the E2 visa adds up to $370,000. This is considerably lower than the investment required for the EB-5 visa program. It is also a much faster route and hence preferred by many Indians seeking US citizenship.

Grenada Citizenship by Investment – Documents Required

  • The completed DOS Form DS-156 and DOS Form DS-156E
  • Male applicants between the age of 16 and 45 years must submit the DOS Form DS-157
  • Copy of the applicant’s passport with at least 1 blank page and validity for more than 6 months beyond the travel period
  • 2 Passport sized photographs
  • Copy of the applicant’s CV
  • Detailed Business Plan for the investment
  • Evidence of having enough funds
  • Evidence of having worked in an executive or supervisory capacity
  • Proof of making the required investment in the USA
  • Proof of establishing a business in the USA

The time taken to process the data is typically between 2 weeks and 4 months.
