Denmark signed an agreement to join the Schengen area in 1996 but became a part of the Schengen region only in 2001. Since then, tourists can enter the country with a Schengen visa and do not need to apply for a separate tourist visa for Denmark. However, since 2011, Denmark has reintroduced border checks.
The Schengen region came into being in 1985. France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxemburg were the 5 countries who signed the first Schengen agreement.
By signing this agreement, the 5 countries agreed that their citizens could pass through the borders of these countries freely without a visa.
The Schengen agreement also set into motion a common visa policy for tourists entering any of these countries. Today, the Schengen region comprises of 26 countries including Denmark. Tourists from around the world can visit any of these countries with a single Schengen visa.
A person holding a Schengen visa can visit any of the 26 Schengen countries. This visa can be obtained at the consulate of any of these countries but there are a few guidelines to be kept in mind.
If you are visiting only one country, you should apply for the Schengen visa at the consulate of that country. If you are visiting more than one country, apply for the Schengen visa at the consulate of the country you plan on visiting first or the country you plan on spending the most time in.

One of the things consulate officers are concerned with is where tourists intend on staying while in the country. All tourists must be able to show that they have a place to stay in Denmark. If you plan on staying with friends or family members, an invitation letter from them can suffice.
If you are planning to stay in a hotel, you will need to include hotel booking receipts. If you do not want to make hotel bookings in advance, you could make a dummy booking.
A dummy booking can be made at many hotels by paying a nominal amount. This amount can be used as a credit against future bookings at the hotel.
