Denmark has a number of renowned educational institutions. Interestingly, lectures in most Danish universities are given in small groups so students get more personal attention from the lecturer.

These universities also encourage students to participate in social events organized on and off campus. One of the other advantages of choosing to study in Denmark over other European countries is the ease of getting a student visa.

Who Needs A Denmark Student Visa

The first step to getting a student visa is determining whether you need one or not.

Residents of Sweden, Norway, and Finland do not need a visa to study in Denmark. However, they do need a Danish Personal Identification Number.

This can be easily obtained on arrival as long as the student has a valid passport and photo identification.

Residents of other European countries and Switzerland can stay and study in Denmark for up to 3 months without a visa. The only thing required is a valid passport.

If students from these countries are enrolled in courses that last longer than 3 months, they will need to get a Danish registration certificate.  This should be obtained within 3 months of arrival from the Regional State Administration. The documents required for this are:

  • Valid passport
  • Letter from the university confirming admission
  • 2 passport sized photographs

Having a registration certificate allows the students to get a Personal Identification Number. This document is a must if the student plans on working part-time alongside his/her studies.

Students from outside Europe need a student visa or a residence permit depending on the duration of the course they are enrolled in. Students enrolled in courses for less than 3 months need to apply for a tourist visa.

This visa does not allow students to take on part-time work in Denmark. If the course is for more than 3 months, a residence permit will be required.

This permit also allows international students to take on part-time work for up to 20 hours per week.

Is it possible to open a Danish bank account before arriving with a student visa?

You cannot open a regular Danish bank account before arriving in Denmark with a student visa.

Here are the reasons why it is not possible:

  • CPR Number: This is the 10-digit unique identification number that will be issued only after you arrive in Denmark, register with the local municipality, and obtain a residence permit. Banks require this number for opening an account.
  • Proof of Residence: You may be required to show proof of a physical address in Denmark.
  • Physical presence: Most banks require you to be present physically to verify your identity, passport, and residence status.

Though some banks allow you to start the application process online before arriving in Denmark, you still need to visit the bank in person to complete the account opening process.

What is the visa interview process for Denmark student visas?

A visa interview is not mandatory for Denmark student visa.

After you submit the application online with supporting documents, you need to schedule an appointment at VFS Global or the Danish consulate for biometrics.

Once the biometrics process is completed, you may or may not be called for a visa interview. If you are called for an interview, here’s what you should do:

  • Carry all the documents that you had submitted along with the application
  • Prepare yourself for the interview.
  • Some of the common questions include – why did you choose Denmark? Why did you choose this specific course and university? How does the course align with your career goals? How will you fund your education and stay? Do you intend to return to your home country after completing your studies?
  • Be confident, honest, and clear in your answers.

What are the common reasons for Denmark student visa rejection and how to avoid them?

Even a small mistake in your visa application can lead to rejection. Some of the common reasons for Denmark student visa rejection are:

Insufficient financial proof

If you cannot show proof of sufficient funds to support yourself in Denmark or the submitted financial documents do not meet the minimum requirements, your student visa application can get rejected. In case your bank statements, sponsorship letter, or funding sources lack clarity, your application will not be approved.

Incomplete documentation

Submitting the application without the required forms or documents, discrepancies in your personal or professional information in the documents, incomplete forms, or any other errors are some of the reasons for your visa rejection.

History of visa violations

Individuals with a history of visa violations, overstays, or other immigration issues are most likely to get their visa application rejected.

Weak ties to home country

If you cannot convince Danish immigration officials about your intention to return to your home country after completing studies, your visa may be rejected.

Criminal Record

Indulging in criminal activities can shatter your dream of studying in Denmark.

Medical Issues

Your application may be flagged if you have any serious health issues.

Poor Statement of Purpose

The purpose of going to Denmark must be clear, i.e., primarily for study and not to work or immigrate. Immigration officers would like to know why you have chosen the course, the university, and your future career plans. Any vague reasons may result in rejection.

How to Avoid Rejection

  • Provide bank statements of the last 3-6 months, showing adequate funds for tuition and living expenses. You must also submit scholarship letters, sponsorship details, and a loan approval letter (if applicable) along with the application form.
  • Ensure all the required documents are meticulously prepared and submitted, all translations are certified, and the application form is correctly filled.
  • The Statement of Purpose (SOP) explaining why you have opted for the specific course and university, and how it aligns with your future career plans must be clear.
  • Be honest in disclosing any previous visa applications or rejections. Hiding or misrepresenting this information may result in rejection.
  • Be confident, calm, and honest while answering questions during the visa interview.
  • Last but not the least, apply well in advance. This will give you time to address any issues and avoid last-minute errors.
