Duration Of Canadian Work Permits
Unless you have a permanent resident status you are not allowed to work in Canada for unspecified durations. Foreign nationals who intend to be employed in Canada require a work permit. These work permits are issued for a specific period. You need to renew your permit before the date expires.
There is a certain limit set by the Canadian government when it comes to the duration of the work permits issued to international workers. The total period that a non-Canadian can work in this country also has an expiration date.

Open Work Permits To Canada
A foreigner can apply for an open work permit to Canada in the following situations.
- You are a common-law partner/ spouse of an international student who is doing a full-time course in Canada
- You are an international student who’s just graduated from college/university (Post-secondary institution) in Canada
- You are a partner/spouse of a temporary international worker in Canada
- According to the NOC (National Occupation Classification), the temporary worker must be doing a level 0, A, or B occupation in Canada
An open work permit to Canada differs from a regular work permit in several ways.
- No particular employer or job is specified in the permit
- You are permitted to work for any Canadian employer and you can choose any field
- You do not require a positive LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) to apply
- A legal employment offer letter is also not required to get this permit
A regular work permit contains the details of the employer as well as the specific job on it. The permit holder is restricted from taking up no other employees other than what’s mentioned in the work permit.
